The former capital of the adil shah dynasty is today a fascinating open air museum, its monuments and ruins a testament to their love of fine architecture. Bijapur has a lot of waiting to be discovered, being full of mosques, mausoleums, palaces, towers and fortifications. 

The magnificent gol gumbaz which was built in 1659 is the mausoleum of emperor mohammed adil shah and the main landmark here. The structure is an architectural and engineering wonder, the enormous dome, 38 meters in diameter is said to be the second largest after St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The whispering gallery is quite fascinating, too; if you whisper into the wall, a person at the opposite side of the gallery will be able to hear you clearly.
